San Remo Solar Birdbath Fountain - rust. Water quality varies from county to county...of which many rural water sources have high concentrations of lime, iron and other scale producing elements. When there is residue of that nature it is very difficult to keep it looking clean without treating it with chemicals that may be harmful to the birds that drink from it. There are some chemicals on the market that retard build-up of algae that are PH safe, but that's just one potential hazard. The best thing to do is to replace the water regularly - perhaps as often as once a week. If there is noticeable build-up of residue, it is best to remove it using a mild detergent in water and a medium bristled brush (a toilet bowl brush, for example). The birdbath bowl should be thoroughly rinsed after washing prior to putting clean water in it. Not intended for use during freezing temperatures.
